- Designed to separate air from water in a closed heating system so that it can be properly vented. Baffles inside the purger cause dissolved air to be separated from the water as it flows through the purger. The elimination of air improves the performance of the system and helps prevent harmful corrosion.
The water that is used initially to fill a hot water heating system contains dissolved air. Make-up water added at a later time will similarly have a high air content. Heating this water releases the air and permits it to be circulated in the system, which must be vented. The purpose of an air purger is to continuously separate and collect any
These air purgers feature: Provides air and water separation in hydronic heating systems; Improves the efficiency and reduces noise of your closed heating system; Heavy duty cast iron construction; Directional flow arrow to ensure correct installation; 1/2" bottom tapping for expansion tank mounting; 1/8" top tapping for air vent mounting
Mar 10, 2008 · Air purger leak OK, maybe the big brains out there can help me with this one. I have this American BS3 air purger in the hot water heating system in my home. There's a gizmo screwed into the top of it (see pic)that sometimes leaks water. The water runs down the unit drips on the expansion tank and then onto the boiler.
Oct 27, 2015 · Purging Air From a Hot Water Heating System . Purging, or "bleeding," air from a hot water system is essential for ensuring proper circulation and, in turn, a warm home. Most hot water systems are closed systems, which means that there's always water circulating back and forth between the pipes and boiler.
As the water cools, it is returned to the boiler to be reheated. Occasionally, air will get into the heating system, which will cause noises such as bubbling or gurgling; if there's enough air, it could prevent the water from circulating throughout the house. You can fix this problem by bleeding your heating system.

The stack, however, does not have to be purged. A basic rule of thumb: for every cubic foot of the heating chamber there should be four cubic feet of fresh air or inert gas passing through the purge airflow. Refer to the NFPA86 standard for more details. There are two basic purge requirements: purge airflow is adequate, and purge time satisfied.
